JEJU CELEBRITIES
Under Maintenance & Revitalization , I suggested the promotion of Jejueo to change its perception and therefore keep the language alive.
This promotion could be done by Jeju celebrities themselves, by using their unique language in interviews, advertisements, songs or movies.
Below, you can be acquainted with the Jeju 'young generation' of celebrities.
Baekho (백호)
Real name: Kand Dong Ho (강동호)
Birth: 1995
Occupation: main vocalist of K/pop group NU'EST.
K-pop group Gugudan's member show off their dialect on Korean TV show "Weekly Idol".
Up until 0:50 you can see Gugudan's Mina speak in Jejueo.
The video has no subtitles, however, you can easily notice the difference between standard Korean and Jejueo spoken by Mina.
The beginning of the video shows WJSN's Dayoung use Jeju language, followed by Gugudan's Mina on famous Korean TV show "Happy Together".
This video has English subtitles so that you can better understand what is happening.
As you can see, celebrities do use Jejueo on TV shows. However, Jeju language is often used for entertainment purposes and rarely, if not at all, used in a serious context as a standard language.
